Your Android phone works fine out of the box — but "fine" is not the same as good. Buried in the settings are options that protect your privacy, stretch your battery and silence annoying interruptions, and most of them are off or set the wrong way by default. Menu names can vary slightly between Samsung, Pixel and other brands, but every setting below exists on current Android phones.
Privacy and Security First
1. Review app permissions. Go to Settings > Privacy > Permission manager and check which apps can see your location, camera, microphone and contacts. Most apps need far less access than they ask for — take away anything that looks unnecessary.
2. Auto-remove permissions for unused apps. In Settings > Apps > Unused apps (or the Play Protect settings), Android can strip permissions from apps you have not opened in months. Turn it on and forget about old apps quietly keeping access forever.
3. Hide sensitive notifications on the lock screen. Under Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen, choose to hide sensitive content. Your messages still arrive, but nobody can read them by picking up your phone.
4. Turn off ad personalization. In Settings > Privacy > Ads, you can delete or reset your advertising ID and limit personalized ads. It will not remove ads, but it reduces how much of your activity is used to target them.
5. Turn on Find My Device. Check Settings > Security > Find My Device is enabled. If your phone is ever lost or stolen, you can locate it, lock it or erase it from any browser.
6. Keep Google Play Protect on. Open the Play Store, tap your profile, then Play Protect, and make sure scanning is enabled. It checks your apps for harmful behavior, including ones installed from outside the store.
Battery and Performance
7. Enable Adaptive Battery. Settings > Battery > Adaptive Battery learns which apps you actually use and limits power for the rest. It is one of the simplest battery wins on modern Android.
8. Restrict your worst battery hogs. In Settings > Battery > Battery usage, find the apps draining the most power, tap them, and set them to Restricted if you do not need them running in the background.
9. Schedule dark theme. On phones with OLED screens, dark mode genuinely saves power. In Settings > Display, turn on dark theme and schedule it to switch automatically at sunset.
10. Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning. Under Settings > Location > Location services, disable Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning. Your phone stops constantly hunting for networks in the background, which saves battery and reduces location tracking.
Calm and Convenience
11. Turn on notification history. Settings > Notifications > Notification history keeps a record of alerts you swiped away by accident — including the ones apps quietly delete. You will wonder how you lived without it.
12. Silence noisy apps individually. Instead of muting your whole phone, go to Settings > Notifications > App notifications and switch off the apps that buzz all day. Keep calls, messages and banking alerts; silence the rest.
13. Set a Private DNS. In Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS, entering a provider hostname such as one.one.one.one or dns.google encrypts your DNS queries and can block some trackers. If anything misbehaves, switch it back to Automatic.
14. Use Bedtime mode and app timers. Digital Wellbeing (in Settings) lets you set daily timers for addictive apps and a Bedtime mode that dims the screen and silences calls at night. Your sleep will thank you.
15. Turn on app pinning. In Settings > Security > App pinning (sometimes under "More security settings"), you can pin one app to the screen before handing your phone to someone — they cannot wander into your photos or messages.
Spend ten minutes on this list once, and your phone will stay faster, safer and quieter every single day after.
