False Emergency Alerts Broadcast Across Ukraine

Ukraine's official Air Alert application was temporarily compromised on Sunday evening, issuing false emergency warnings about radiation, chemical, and nuclear dangers in Kyiv and other regions. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that hostile interference affected the system and reassured the public that no real radiation threat existed.

According to updates posted on Telegram, false notifications began circulating around 22:47 local time. Initial messages declared a radiation hazard in Kyiv, followed shortly by a Russian-language alert warning of a nationwide nuclear attack. Subsequent messages claimed chemical attacks and active street fighting were taking place in the capital. Individual all-clear notifications were later delivered around 23:53 to clear each false report.

Regional Disruption and Government Response

The incident caused disruptions outside Kyiv as well. In the Lviv region, the system triggered physical loudspeaker sirens broadcasting a radiation hazard warning. Regional officials in Ivano-Frankivsk and Vinnytsia also reported app anomalies. Vinnytsia Governor Natalya Zabolotna identified the incident as a cyber-attack and cautioned residents against clicking links inside the messages due to potential phishing risks. Ivano-Frankivsk Governor Svitlana Onyshchuk reported that conditions remained calm despite false red-level alerts being displayed for the area.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, which supports the application, temporarily disabled the app for maintenance after acknowledging it had been compromised. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Central Intelligence Agency and the Centre for Countering Disinformation urged citizens to rely on alternative official channels and emergency procedures.

Official Safety Guidance for Citizens

In response to the outage and fake reports, authorities issued several recommendations for citizens during air raid disruptions:

  • Enable emergency distress notifications directly on mobile smartphones.
  • Listen to physical sirens for active localized warnings.
  • Verify all security reports exclusively through official government channels.
  • Avoid opening suspicious web links contained in emergency alerts.

The security incident occurred shortly before 23:00 Sunday, coinciding with the end of a localized ceasefire in the Kherson region that had been implemented to allow civilian evacuations from Russian-occupied Oleshky.
