Local Ceasefire Expires in Kherson Region
A short-term humanitarian truce in Ukraine's front-line Kherson region ended on Sunday evening at 22:59 Ukrainian time. The temporary pause in fighting, which began the previous Tuesday, allowed residents to evacuate the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, where civilians had faced severe shortages of food, clean water, and electricity.
The evacuation arrangement was mediated with assistance from U.S. First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo. According to Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, evacuees ranged from a one-year-old child to a 94-year-old resident. People leaving the town had to travel through Russian-controlled areas into southern Russia, fly to Belarus, and finally cross back into Ukraine across its northern border.
Energy Network Targeted Across Multiple Regions
Despite the temporary pause in Oleshky, military actions continued in other parts of the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russian bombardments targeted energy infrastructure in four different regions overnight on Saturday, cutting off power to hundreds of thousands of homes.
Emergency repair work took place throughout Sunday. While service was restored to many households in the Dnipropetrovsk region, more than 60,000 subscribers were still without electricity by Sunday evening. Frequent attacks on utility grids have forced authorities to implement nationwide emergency power cuts, leaving the capital city of Kyiv with minimal electricity during most hours of the day alongside disrupted water service.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine also confirmed that an overnight strike in the Vinnytsia region resulted in two deaths, including a 13-year-old girl.
Ukrainian Counter-Strike and Air Defense Requests
In response to the aerial bombardment, Ukrainian forces launched a strike against a major missile fuel production plant in Russia's Rostov region. According to President Zelensky, the attack triggered a fire and damaged four separate production facilities at the site.
Zelensky stated that the volume of Russian strikes over the preceding week was extremely high, asserting that Russian forces were attempting to exploit Ukraine's shortage of ballistic missile interceptors. He renewed appeals to the United States, European nations, and other international partners for the urgent delivery of Patriot air defense systems.
