Democratic Socialists Achieve Historic Midterm Success

Candidates supported or affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) secured a record number of federal office victories in Tuesday's US midterm elections, marking the movement's most successful national political night to date.

Chanpreet Singh, a member of the National Electoral Commission, noted the unprecedented scale of the outcome during a live broadcast on Tuesday night. The stream, hosted by political commentator Hasan Piker on Twitch, reached over 200,000 viewers.

Growth and Key Issues

The political group experienced a significant rise in membership in 2016 following US Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, which introduced socialist perspectives on healthcare and housing to a wider audience. Further attention and membership growth followed the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City in 2025. Currently, the movement reports having over 120,000 members with chapters in all 50 states.

Members vote to determine organizational endorsements for federal, state, and local contests. Endorsed candidates frequently share positions on central issues such as healthcare, immigration, and the war in Gaza.

State-by-State Victories

DSA-affiliated candidates secured federal offices across several states:

  • New York: Claire Valdez, Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Brad Lander won election to the US House of Representatives for the first time, while Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won re-election to her seat.
  • Michigan: Representative Rashida Tlaib won re-election, Donavan McKinney secured a House seat for the first time, and William Lawrence defeated a Republican candidate in a competitive race.
  • Colorado: Melat Kiros, an immigrant from Ethiopia, won election to the House by a wide margin.
  • Pennsylvania: Voters in Philadelphia elected former state lawmaker Chris Rabb to the US House.
  • California: Angela Gonzales-Torres defeated a Democratic incumbent for a House seat in Los Angeles.
  • New Jersey: Adam Hamawy, a former US Army doctor and surgeon who worked in Gaza, won a district after aligning with the movement and campaigning alongside its candidates.
